First revealed by retailer Mighty Ape Games in a now deleted Facebook post, Sony is discontinuing the PlayStation 3 in New Zealand.
Confirming the news with Those Gamers, a Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand representative said:
SCENZ will not be shipping anymore PlayStation 3 consoles to its retailers, however the platform is still available in retail outlets throughout NZ and being supported with peripherals, great new releases, and back catalogue software.
The likely reason behind this move is the PlayStation 4’s success in New Zealand. Not only is it the fastest-selling home console of the decade, but it owned a 46% hardware market share in 2014 and it was 2014’s #1 console in terms of hardware and software sales.
The PS3 debuted in Europe and Australia in March 2007, meaning it lasted eight years in New Zealand. For comparison, the PlayStation 2 was discontinued in Japan 12 years after launch.
Since the PS3 is still selling 2,000+ units each week in Japan, don’t expect it to be discontinued there for some time.
