Rise of the Tomb Raider Dev Explains Why Lara Has to Learn Ancient Greek

In Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft will be required to decipher messages written in ancient Greek as part of puzzle solving in order to access secret areas and obtain leads. When asked for the reason behind implementing such an idea, Creative Director Noah Hughes told GamesRadar that Crystal Dynamics wanted to emphasize on the game’s archaeological themes, and wanted to highlight Lara’s archaeological background as opposed to focusing solely on combat and exploration. He explained:

How do we make sure that the archaeological themes and tomb raiding, as a game system, is contributing to your progression as a character?

We really did want to make sure that [Rise of the Tomb Raider] was celebrating, not just those survival instincts and skills, but her archaeological background, her passion for unravelling the world’s secrets, and some of her intellectual prowess as a character.

Hughes also said that the developers want tomb raiding to be “as important to your success in the game as your ability to survive environments or confront your enemies.”

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be out for the PlayStation in Q4 2016. Those who are interested in taking a look at the game’s combat and environment should check out the gameplay video above, which was captured with the difficulty level cranked up to Seasoned Raider.
