At E3 2015, id Software said during a livestream that it is aiming for 1080p/60fps with DOOM. Elaborating more on that, Executive Producer Marty Stratton said in an interview with GameSpot during QuakeCon 2015 that the studio wants its games to run “as fast as possible” on the “highest resolution possible,” and this is something that the developers have always aimed for. Additionally, id’s technology team wants the game to be the “best-looking game” out there at 60fps and 1080p.
When you’re developing, you make thousands of decisions that have an impact on performance or visual fidelity. We’ve always been at the forefront of saying we want our games to run as fast as possible at the highest resolution possible. So for us, that goal is 1080p and 60fps. Along with that goal, the mantra of our technology team is that we want to be the best-looking game out there at 60fps and 1080p. So you draw that line in the sand.
Stratton later clarified that id isn’t simply ticking a box by aiming for a high resolution, and that it’s actually important to the feel of the game.
It’s important to the way our combat feels and our movement feels. It’s got to be fast, it’s got to be fluid, and it’s all based on that. It really is a gameplay goal first and foremost.
He also said that it’s important for players to have a consistent and high-quality experience, which means a “fast, fluid 60fps.” id Software believes that by cutting corners during development, games end up being lackluster. “It’s just a hodgepodge of a lack of focus throughout, that’s when things start going awry. I think we’ll hit all of our goals,” he said.
DOOM will be out in 2016 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A multiplayer alpha test for the game will be arriving in the coming months.
