John Smedley will no longer be the CEO of Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) following a DDoS attack on Daybreak’s servers.
A spokesperson for Daybreak told GamesBeat that Smedley will remain with the company, although it is not clear what position he will be transferred to.
I can confirm that John Smedley will be taking some time off from the company for the near-term and transitioning to a different role to be determined. Upon finalization of his plans, further communication will be provided.
A few weeks ago, Smedley threatened to take legal action against members of the hacker group Lizard Squad for stealing his personal information and calling in a bomb threat that caused his plane to be grounded. After publicly making the threats on Twitter, Daybreak Games experienced a DDoS attack that took down a number of games, including PlanetSide 2, H1Z1, and Everquest, with Lizard Squad claiming to be behind the attack.
It has been confirmed that current COO Russell Shanks will be taking on the role of company president. What do you think of Smedley stepping down as CEO?
