Odin Sphere Leifdrasir Revealed

Atlus and Vanillaware have just announced via stream that they will be bringing new life to the PS2’s Odin Sphere with the new and improved Odin Sphere Leifdrasir for PS3, PS4, and Vita. It’s neither a sequel nor a simple HD remaster, but a kind of re-imagining of the original.

These are not direct feed screenshots, but captures from the stream:

The foundation story seems to be the same as the original PS2 game (judging by what few early details we have), but gameplay is being expanded upon. Combat will see modifications, and if you played the original, you can see from the video below that exploring stages is now handled much differently. It looks like combat (from this video, anyway) could be faster and tighter, and there were definitely some new moves on display.

And do I see a new way to mix potions?

Oh, right, here’s this:

Being upgraded from PS2 to much newer hardware, I wonder if the boss battles will be relieved of the slowdown that hurt the original? Just a hope.

The game comes out Jan. 14 of 2016 and the price is set for 7980 yen (about $64 USD…though that amount was like $85 USD a year ago. Oh, exchange rate, you fickle beast). The original game is available on the PS2 Classic line of the PSN Store.

The game’s official Japanese website is here.
