UK Retailers Believe More Physical Versions of Indie Games Would Sell Well

UK retailers really want more indie developers to release physical versions of their games, it seems.

Speaking with MCV, representatives from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, GAME and ShopTo all said that there are big opportunities for physical versions of indie games in the UK. Tesco Games Buyer Jon Ferdenzi, for example, said “there is a massive opportunity at retail to maximise sales for indie games,” and mentioned that physical versions of these games would do well “at gifting periods.”

There is a massive opportunity at retail to maximise sales for indie games. Whether it would be full price digital games through points cards or fully boxed solutions.

I actually think the latter is a very good idea, especially for grocery at gifting periods. The price point is generally lower, and would add a lot of value to purchases if boxed with other product.

Meanwhile, the head of another retail company also provided some comments, and explained that physical versions of certain games, like Minecraft and Terraria, have done well. He noted that “there does seem to be a really solid market for a physical version” of some digital games.

There does seem to be a really solid market for a physical version of some of these digital experiences. Some customers still like having discs. Not only have we seen Minecraft sell and keep selling, we also have Terraria, which has ticked over really well for over a year.

Do you think more physical versions of indie games would do well in the UK? What about in the US?
