While some (most?) gamers might be excited at the prospect of playing games using Sony’s virtual reality headset Project Morpheus, it seems note everyone’s a fan when it comes to the new gaming medium
In an interview in the latest issue of EDGE magazine, Xbox boss Phil Spencer was asked about the PlayStation 4’s Project Morpheus headset and how the Xbox brand doesn’t have anything to combat it in the VR space.
It’s more of an announcement than anybody really having any VR stuff right now – and that’s not a shot at Sony. I mean, it’s hard tech, and I think it’s great what they’re doing with Morpheus. But they’ve announced [it for] the first half of 2016, so a little over a year from now.
Spencer acknowledges that Valve, Samsung have VR projects, too, but even so, he doesn’t think the tech is a “now” thing.
As you say, there are partners out there, and while these guys are PC-based today, if we want to do something with Xbox… Right now, it’s just been about technologies and things that I think we need to do on Xbox One to make the experience better, and that’s where our focus has been. And I don’t think VR is a now thing. I’m not saying it’s five years from now, but it’s not really a now now thing. Valve’s got their VR thing, which I think is great; Samsung has GearVR, too.
While Microsoft might not have a proper VR project announced, Spencer did point out that the company has the HoloLens project; and how there’s “nothing that precludes us (Microsoft) from doing something in that VR space.”
Hardware allegiances aside, do you agree with Spencer and how he sees VR? Or do you think Sony will surprise every PlayStation fan with Project Morpheus? In case you want to see the two tech compared side-by-side, make sure you watch our Project Morpheus vs. HoloLens match-up video.
