No matter where your opinion stands regarding Sony’s first attempt at a portable system, there is no denying that the PlayStation Portable had a lot of great games. From JRPGs to 3D platformers, there was a selection of games that could appeal to anybody. With this week containing the release of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD , it got us thinking at PlayStation LifeStyle about what PSP games deserve a remake on either the Vita or PS4. Without further ado, take a look at our choices for titles to remake that could help bolster the game libraries on Sony’s consoles.
Now that you have seen our suggestions, why don’t you chime in below with your suggestions! What PSP games would you like to see receive a second chance on either the Vita or PS4?
PSP Remakes
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII holds a special place in many gamer's hearts. Due to its popularity, Square Enix released several several new entries fleshing out the world of Gaia. One of these entries was Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. A remake of the Zack Fair led action RPG could be a great way to drum up interest in a possible remake of FF7, which fans have spent years asking for.
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
The Ratchet & Clank series is one that is currently in flux. A reboot of the series is currently planned for a PS4 release later this year, but until then a compilation of Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank could keep the series in the minds of gamers. These two PSP titles were both well received and already have PS2 versions, so a remaster wouldn't be out of the question.
Gitaroo Man Lives!
Developer iNiS has been responsible for some of the best music games ever created. While Elite Beat Agents might be their most popular title in the US, Gitaroo Man has a cult following. While originally a PS2 title, Gitaroo Man Lives! adds two additional stages to the mix. A remake with additional content would make for a great downloadable title on either the PS4 or Vita but the chances are admittedly slim.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
While the recent console releases of Grand Theft Auto took a much more serious turn, the two PSP titles - Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories - were a great throwback to what fans loved about the PS2 entries. A remake of the two titles on Vita could give gamers hundreds of hours of enjoyment.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is one of the best received games on the PSP but it still had some issues. Frame-rate issues and a questionable difficulty curve could be fixed if the game was remade.
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier
While not as good as the earlier released Daxter , Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier was an interesting platformer in a beloved series. With Naughty Dog not ready to return to the series, a remake of the two PSP titles could keep the series relevant until another developer is tasked with bringing it back.
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is currently the only canonical game in the series that isn't playable on PS3. The title, which takes place before Peace Walker and after Snake Eater , could see some upgrades such as new cutscenes and voice-over work. Perhaps another Metal Gear Solid Collection could work if the two Metal Gear Acid titles were added in.
Jeanne d'Arc
This Level-5 developed tactical RPG was an interesting take on Joan of Arc. A remake could be just the thing that gets this underrated title the recognition it deserves.
Resistance: Retribution
Resistance: Retribution was a console game jammed onto a portable system. The PSP was not well equipped to handle such an ambitious third person shooter so a remake could turn this into the great title the developers wanted it to be.
Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy
The last Final Fantasy game on this list, I swear. The Dissidia series is one of the best received spin-offs of the storied RPG series. It allows players to choose from a handful of series protagonists and antagonists to battle it out in a fighting game. Even if a remake doesn't happen, we might be getting a new Dissidia game on PS4 if the arcade version gets ported over. Fingers crossed.
Killzone: Liberation
The success of games such as Helldivers and Dead Nation shows that there is an audience for top-down shooters on PS4. Killzone: Liberation would make for a fantastic PSN title and one that could keep the Killzone brand in the news while Guerilla Games works on the next installment.
LocoRoco
Despite the series receiving three entries on PSP, LocoRoco has been mysteriously absent since 2009. A compilation of the previous titles could be the impetus that gets a new title the green-light.
MotorStorm: Arctic Edge
DriveClub didn't quite work out as well as both Sony and Evolution Studios wanted. Maybe it is time to bring back Evolution Studios' original racing series - MotorStorm. A lot of gamers didn't play Arctic Edge so it is a prime candidate to get remade for current-gen systems.
Patapon
Patapon was one of the most unique games released for the PSP as it combined commanding troops with music. The series saw three games on the PSP including 2011's Patapon 3 . Since it has been four years since the series saw some love, a trilogy collection might just be the thing to see if gamers are still interested in this unique franchise.
Valkyria Chronicles III
With the recent PC release of Valkyria Chronicles , the series has found itself once again in the gaming spotlight. That is why it makes more sense than ever to bring both of the PSP titles - Valkyria Chronics II & III - to PS4. III is of particular interest as it never came stateside. We're lucky enough to have a review right here on the site: Valkyria Chronicles 3 review . Yeah they use the "3" instead of III in Japan, as they used 2 instead of the II that NA used. Learn something every day, right?
