As part of a special edition podcast featuring community questions, Game Informer interviewed Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, where Straley said working on the PlayStation 4 is “like butter. It’s smooth, delicious.”
“It’s actually pretty amazing, to tell you the truth,” he continues. “There’s things that have been issues in the past that aren’t issues at all right now and it’s funny because of how quickly you forget that it used to be an issue.”
Sticking with the development of Uncharted 4 on PS4, Druckmann revealed how hard it would be to get the game running at 60fps:
Really fucking hard. I mean, but that’s true for any game. It was really hard on The Last of Us Remastered, and that’s a game we have finished, and we knew exactly what the end result needs to look like. Here we’re trying to push the boundaries of what this game can look [like] and do real-time cutscenes, and trying to do sixty [frames-per-second], is really hard.
As of right now, Druckmann doesn’t know if they’ll reach 60fps in A Thief’s End:
The objective for us is just to make the best experience. Right now we’re trying to push the look, and then we’ll see where we’re at, and we’ll re-assess. We’re constantly making choices throughout production of what’s going to make the game feel best, and look its best.
Following this, Straley said a Photo Mode in Uncharted 4 “would be awesome” if they have have time to add it.
Turning to a potential Uncharted Collection on PS4, Druckmann said, “Right now, all our focus is on Uncharted 4. That’s all we can spare.” Of course, Naughty Dog is a two team studio, and Druckmann teased that the other team is “very small” and they’re working on some “prototype stuff for the next game-y thing, but almost everybody else is on Uncharted 4.”
Finally, Druckmann couldn’t say if Uncharted 4 would be the last game in the series as it’s owned by Naughty Dog and Sony, but he did add that they’re working towards “the end of Nathan Drake’s story. Everything has been building up towards this moment and we’re working our hardest to give it a really satisfying close.”
