When Sony first detailed PlayStation 4 firmware update 2.00, they said we could expect it in the Fall 2014 window, meaning that it could be out anytime between September 22 and December 21.
While we still don’t have an exact time for 2.00, PlayStation Europe Blog Manager Fred Dutton says it’s right around the corner:
I can’t comment on new hardware features today, other than to say that [updates] are always in the works – as previously announced there’s a big PS4 update just round the corner that we’ll be talking more about soon.
Over on Twitter, DriveClub Game Director Paul Rustchynsky was asked if there was any truth to the rumor that firmware update 2.00 would be out prior to game launch tomorrow. He replied, “Just a rumour, no truth.”
Dutton also responded to a couple more people on the EU PS Blog, including someone who wondered if there were any plans to offer a PlayStation Plus subscription for a cheaper price, only offering online multiplayer access:
An interesting suggestion! There’s no such plans at present I’m afraid, and it might well present a few problems as highlighted below, but I wouldn’t want to rule anything out.
Those problems were suggested by another commenter, who said, “That’s a bad idea, it’d only segregate the games on PS+ even more, and on top of that it’d decrease the revenue allocated to paying for them, resulting in worse offerings.”
Finally, Dutton revealed how the PlayStation Plus free games are chosen each month:
We have a global PS Plus team who select the games every month. I’m afraid I can’t comment on exactly why they choose particular titles, other than to say they do their very best to pick a diverse line-up of quality games over the three platforms.
Of course, not all games appeal to all gamers, but there’s some really cool stuff in this month’s selection. Pix the Cat is ridiculously addictive and made by a scarily talented team with a great pedigree, Spelunky is one of the best platformers of the last 10 years and Rainbow Moon is a cracking RPG. As for Batman – I appreciate it’s 5 years old, but [in my honest opinion] I’d also argue it’s the best game in the series.
Do you think we’ll see 2.00 before or after the PS4’s first birthday?
