Report: Microsoft to Announce Mojang Acquisition Tomorrow, Wants to Boost Mobile Sector

According to an article published by Reuters, Microsoft’s rumored acquisition of Minecraft developer Mojang will be announced on Monday, September 15. The news agency also suggests that the company’s aim isn’t to boost its PC and console sector, rather its mobile division.

Microsoft’s impending purchase of Mojang, the Swedish developer with 100 million players of its open world Minecraft game, is more aimed at pulling users onto the software company’s obscure mobile platform than its better known PC system or Xbox game console.

The report also states that game developers tend to ignore Microsoft’s Windows Phone system and Surface tablet. At the same time, Mojang’s Minecraft is the top paid application on both Apple iOS and Android systems. Dave Bisceglia, Chief Executive of independent game studio Tap Lab said:

It seems like Microsoft is looking at Mojang and Minecraft as a way to tap into this enormous cultural phenomenon. If you look at iOS, Minecraft has been a top-grossing game for quite some time, if Microsoft could on Windows phones give players a unique and compelling experience that you can’t get on the other platforms, that could be a driver to sell devices to existing Minecraft fans.

I guess we’ll have to wait to find out what exactly Microsoft has in mind, and how the acquisition will impact Minecraft on PlayStation platforms.
