July 2014 Must-Plays
These are July's Must-Play games. They are the runners-up to July's Game of the Month.
July 2014 Must-Play Gallery
July saw the release of some remasters, a couple of hack 'n' slash titles, and at least one great indie. Here are the games that you ought to be playing from July 2014.
One Piece: Unlimited World Red
Cameron didn't play much this month, so his personal vote was for the hack 'n' slash One Piece title. Read his full review here .
"The combat is deceptively deep with good AI teammates and unique combat moves, but also shallow in it’s utter lack of difficulty. There is a good game here hidden under layers of tacked on mini-games and half-baked ideas. If you can look past it all, fans of the series or newcomers all together will find plenty of wise cracking, good moments to enjoy."
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
This edition of Guacamelee! is the re-release for PS4. We loved the first one, and this one just made the experience better. Read our full review here .
"Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is just like the original, with a couple of added tweaks — this is a good thing! If you’ve purchased the original, it can be a hard decision to purchase this. If you are a big fan of the series and cannot wait to pummel enemies in Intenso mode, then by all means pick this up. If you never played the original and enjoy Castlevania -like beat-em-ups, then definitely pick this up."
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn
For any fans of either Dynasty Warriors or Gundam, this is the latest game in the series and features the imminent slaughter of hundreds upon hundreds of mobile suits. Read our full review here .
"And as monotonous as I found the gameplay to be, I always found myself justifying a reason to go back in for just one more fight, and isn’t that the true gauge of just how good a game is?"
Rogue Legacy
Rogue Legacy is an incredible indie title that finally made its way to PlayStation platforms. It has all the spirit of the Souls series of games in a retro indie package. Rogue Legacy very narrowly missed getting the Game of the Month for July. Our review is still incoming, because our reviewer can't put down the game in order to write it.
The Last of Us Remastered
If this game wasn't a remaster of a game that already won our Game of the Year award last year, we probably would have picked it as July's Game of the Month. We loved every moment of it though and wanted to give it a spot in July's Must-Play list. Read the full review here .
"Speaking to those who have already played the PS3 version, if you really loved it back then, I would suggest getting this version for PS4 too. It has a lot of extras and it looks really beautiful with the 1080p, higher frame rate, and updated graphics and character models. To those who are interested in diving into The Last of Us for the first time, what are you waiting for?!? The Last of Us Remastered is just a perfect game made even more perfect."
The July 2014 Game of the Month is...
There were many great games in July, but there was one in particular that shined a little bit brighter for the PlayStation LifeStyle staff. That game is...
The Wolf Among Us
Telltale Games concluded the incredible first season of their series based on Fables , The Wolf Among Us . We were impressed by the overall character development and way in which you got to make Bigby Wolf exact character that you wanted him to be. For the awesome story and incredible character development, The Wolf Among Us gets our July 2014 Game of the Month.
Here are a few choice quotes from our Wolf Among Us Season One review :
"The story starts off strong with a strong mystery to draw you in, but the reason I stayed was not primarily due to desiring answers. Instead, I stayed for the strong character story that Telltale offered to me."
"I found myself more captivated by the Fabletown sheriff that I had created rather than the conspiracy that this was set against, and that’s a very good thing. Figuring out the mystery was a great backdrop to highlight the real story that was being told in The Wolf Among Us, and that was the character story of Bigby Wolf."
"Each morally ambiguous decision I made left me questioning whether I was the right person to be making them, but in the end, it was MY Bigby and MY story, and I can only thank Telltale Games for giving me the opportunity to tell such an awesome tale in my own way."
