MotoGP 14 has already released in Europe on the PlayStation 4, 3, Vita, Xbox 360, and Windows last month. Those in North America are still awaiting the game’s official release, which is scheduled for September 2014. Those who have gotten their hands on the European version may have noticed that while the game may run at 1080p on the PS4, it is running at a lower frame rate than is commonly associated with racing games. Developer Milestone S.r.l. has come out with an explanation as to why this is the case.
According to game director Andrea Basilio, “The PS4 version is running 30FPS on 1080p, because we really want to ensure our players with a stable and visually rich experience.” He also notes that this enables MotoGP 14 to host up to 34 bikes on the track in one race, which is a lot to keep track of. Basilio thinks that a higher texture resolution is more important than the number of frames per second:
In my honest opinion the real deal is the resolution, rather than 1080p, a 4K texture makes a huge difference, especially on the new TVs that are starting to come out recently.
In the racing genre, a high frame rate has always been seen as pretty important. But in the end, does it really matter? If you have a lower frame rate, but it is steady, does that beat out a game that has an inconsistent frame rate that can peak at 60 fps? At 30 fps, each frame is on the screen for about 33.33 milliseconds. At 60 fps, this drops in half, to one frame every 16.67 milliseconds. When you’re counting milliseconds of extra reaction time, some racing enthusiasts will claim every little bit helps. What’s your take?
