Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi “New Project” to be Unveiled at Japan Expo, Possibly Free-to-Play

If you’ve been playing Final Fantasy since the franchise first started out, chances are you’ve heard the name Hironobu Sakaguchi who’s often referred to as the father of Final Fantasy.

After the debacle that was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within bombed at the box office in 2001, Sakaguchi resigned from his post as Executive Vice President of Square in 2004 and formed his own studio named Mistwalker. Unfortunately, Sakaguchi’s last two high profile games, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon — both for the Xbox 360 –failed to reach the same success as his previous Final Fantasy releases.

Since then, Sakaguchi released The Last Story for the Wii in 2011 to favorable reviews and has seen been missing from the spotlight. However, that’s about to change very soon. According to Japan-Expo, Sakaguchi will talk about his career and “latest project,” which is a “secret” next week!

Here’s the message in full:

Come meet Hironobu SAKAGUCHI at Japan Expo on Wednesday: he will talk about his career and about his latest project. But that’s still a secret, so don’t miss his conference to be among the first to know!

On Wednesday, Hironobu SAKAGUCHI is sharing the various experiences of his career and his vision of the future of video games during a conference. He will also present his latest project, which is kept secret for the time being… A signing session and a photo shoot are also planner, to get a unique souvenir with Final Fantasy creator.

Now, before anyone jumps to conclusions, NeoGAF user DarkCronos has pointed out that the Gravity Europe can be seen in the post’s page. Based on Gravity’s website, it specializes in free-to-play games which points to Sakaguchi’s game as being F2P or a mobile game. Regardless, though, let’s hope it reaches PlayStation platforms at some point and if it does, we’ll be sure to let you know.
