Deep Silver & Yager Went to Extreme Lengths to Prevent Dead Island 2 PS4 Leaks

Having your game or trailer leaked before any official announcements is a big concern for companies these days, with Battlefield: Hardline the most recent title to suffer through one.

That fear extended to the Dead Island 2 development team at Yager and Deep Silver, with Game Director Bernd Diemer explaining on the PlayStation LiveCast just how far they went to prevent any leaks:

A couple months ago when we started talking to you guys about ‘hey, can we do something exclusive together?’ And then this fantastic deal happened where we have exclusive content on PlayStation [a beta and unnamed content].

And then we were so afraid that the trailer would leak before, because you guys basically said, ‘We’re going to kill you all. If the trailer leaks, the deal is off, we’re gonna kill you, you’ll never work in the industry again. Well, not really… but that’s what it felt like.

So the trailer only lived on one computer – which wasn’t even connected to the internet – and if you wanted to see it, you had to travel from Berlin to Munich, look at it on the guy’s PC who was editing it. And then the guy came back to Berlin, to our studio, and narrated the video to the rest of our team.

… So actually, the final cut, for the first time we saw it here.

At E3, Diemer said they’re showing off some of the combat, but the level at the event was built a year ago.

Set in a quarantined California several months after the events on Banoi, Dead Island 2 brings the ability to handcraft never-before-seen weapons, engage in co-op play, and visit new areas like the Golden Gate and Venice Beach.

Internally called the “world’s smallest MMO,” Deep Silver talked about the game’s seamless multiplayer in a press release:

Developed in Unreal Engine 4, Dead Island 2 brings back its acclaimed, seamless multiplayer for up to eight players who cooperate, compete or simply coexist in a truly social, new-gen multiplayer experience. Dedicated classes offer a variety of gameplay: From the action-oriented berserker to the stealthy hunter, every character offers a different style of play. An in-depth skill system allows the player to handcraft their own heroes and weapons.
