Take-Two: Grand Theft Auto V has Sold-In 32.5 Million Copies, Borderlands 2 at 8.5 Million

If you needed any more confirmation that Grand Theft Auto V has been a humongous phenomenon, Take-Two released their Q3 FY2014 (ended December 31st, 2013) financial results today, with GTA V selling over 32.5 million copies to retailers and was the #1 selling game in 2013, according to the NPD, with Take-Two the top publisher of 2013.

For Take-Two as a whole, GAAP net revenue was up to $1.86 billion during the quarter, a huge jump from the $415.8 million they saw in Q3 FY2013. As well, digital sales were up 42% year-over-year to $132.8 million, with Grand Theft Auto, NBA 2K, Borderlands 2, and BioShock Infinite highlighted.

Looking at 2K games, NBA 2K14 was the fastest-selling game in the series and has already sold-in over 5 million units to retailers, with the franchise selling almost 35 million copies to retailers so far. As well, Borderlands 2 has become the highest-selling 2K game in their history at over 8.5 sold-in to retailers.

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, discussed the numbers:

Take-Two’s business continued to outperform expectations significantly during the fiscal third quarter. Our results were driven by robust holiday demand for Grand Theft Auto V, the franchise record-breaking launch of NBA 2K14, the successful release of WWE 2K14, and strong growth in digitally-delivered revenues led by Grand Theft Auto Online. Take-Two was the top video game publisher of 2013, according to the NPD Group, underscoring our positive momentum over the past year.

For 2014, Take-Two has the Borderlands 2/Dishonored and Skyrim/BioShock Infinite bundles next week, BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 2 DLC coming soon, Evolve in Fall 2015, and NBA 2K15 and WWE 2K15 arriving Fiscal Year 2015 (before March 31st, 2015), but the platforms weren’t announced today.
