Following 1 million PS4s being sold in the first 24 hours of availability in the US and Canada, along with a record-breaking start in the UK, Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 4 has sold through 2.1 million units worldwide (this number of retail sales to consumers is estimated) as of December 1st, 2013. For regional breakdowns, there were 700,000 PS4s sold in Europe and Australasia, meaning 1.4 million have been sold in the United States and Canada.
Andrew House, President and CEO of Sony, had this to say about the numbers:
PS4 delivered the best launch in PlayStation history with the North American release and we’ve continued this incredibly successful start in Europe, Australasia and Latin America. Demand remains incredibly strong and continues to overwhelm the supply worldwide, but we are diligently working to meet those growing demands and to deliver additional PS4 units to our retail partners throughout the holiday season. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.
After saying how there have been over 6.5 million shares captured so far, Sony talked about how the 2014 lineup of titles includes inFamous: Second Son, MLB 14: The Show, Destiny, Watch Dogs, DriveClub, and The Order 1886.
They also touched on Gaikai slightly, noting how it’s still slated for a 2014 release date in the US, allowing you to “have access to a catalog of critically acclaimed PlayStation 3 games on PlayStation 4 and PS3, followed by PlayStation Vita.”
