When the PlayStation Vita 2000 comes to Japan next month, it will have an LCD screen, as opposed to the OLED screen seen on the PlayStation Vita 1000. As Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, told reporters (via Nikkei 1, 2), “The main reason [we switched the screen] is that the LCD panel can now realize an image quality as high as that of the OLED panel.”
House continued by talking about the PlayStation Vita TV, mentioning how it can “technically” support PS3 games through cloud distribution (which is launching next year in the US), so it’s something they’ll be considering. At the same time, he discussed who the PS Vita TV is aimed at by saying that it “was developed mainly for those who have fun with contents with family members in a living room,” adding how “the concept of the PS Vita TV was created in about August 2011, four months before the release of the PS Vita.”
So far, when it comes to North America and Europe seeing the PlayStation Vita TV, Sony has only said that it will be “available first in Japan prior to any other regions.” The reason for Japan’s early dibs is “that there is no leading company in Japan’s video streaming market.”
