With the PlayStation 4 coming out this year at a $399/€399/£349 cost, it would make sense for the PlayStation 3 to receive a price cut soon, but as Fergal Gara, Managing Director at Sony UK, told GI.Biz, “there’s no plans as yet” to make the PS3 cheaper. The reasoning for the price staying put is that it is “a system where it hasn’t been particularly easy to get the costs down,” with Fergal believing the PS3 “will sit there as a viable entry level machine for years to come.”
Even though Fergal’s comments seem to only include the UK and Europe, it’s worth noting that the Grand Theft Auto V PS3 bundle launching on September 17th has a price of $299.99, so it looks as though the PS3 is holding its cost in North America as well, at least for a few more months.
Switching things up and looking just at the PlayStation Vita, Gara talked a little bit about the fact that “it was developed for the PS4, much more than PS3.” He then continued with:
The number of things we could demonstrate and prove was limited – there’s been some good examples – but now we go into the PS4 era, that companion device will look far more clear. We’re optimistic it’s got a lot more legs left in it and the PS4 has given it a shot in the arm.
