  8. Left 4 Dead
  9. Half-Life 2
  10. Shadow of the Colossus

Dan: I see some good picks on your side, like L4D and Manhunt. Which are great titles, and really do give the player that sense of suspense that is synonymous with Halloween. Although, I really don’t know if I can agree with Shadow of the Colossus, or Half-Life 2. As both titles are great experiences, they do not seem to be in the Halloween spirit all that much.

Seb: What are you talking about? The Civil Protection Officers in Half-Life are crazy scary, and there are evil face-crab zombie monsters. It’s easy one of the scariest games out there, simply because the gripping plot draws you in all the more – you actually care if you die. Oh, and the protagonist doesn’t speak. At all. That’s creepy.

SOTC also has an epic game design that makes you more immersed, and more afraid. You think zombies are scary? The colossi are crazy huge, they make zombies look like timid mice. Dress up as one of them at Halloween and you’re guaranteed to get sweeties.

Meanwhile, you have RDR: Undead Nightmare on Elm Street. Have you actually played that game? It’s so easy it’s not even funny. There’s no threat from the zombies at all, I could beat that game with my hands tied behind your body.

Dan: I do not deny that both HL2 and SOTC are both amazing experiences, but when it comes to Halloween I am looking for something that is darker and more brooding. That’s exactly why I think Dead Space is perfect for the occasion, it provides enough suspense and atmosphere to really get your blood going while being a great game also. Much better in my opinion than any of the Resident Evil games, which have almost gone more fantasy than horror.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare may not be the most difficult experience, but it’s a title that many people have, and it does the job of taking a world we know, and flipping it on its head. That is something that Halloween is all about, the one night where the world we knew is not the same, and the only game you have that actually does that incredibly well is DayZ.

Seb: Yeah, DayZ is awesome, and super difficult. If you haven’t played it, don’t expect to just pick up and play, this is an incredibly difficult game. So you want dark and brooding games like Costume Quest? A great game, but it doesn’t exactly help your point. And Dead Space is also pretty fantasy, not that it makes it any worse of a game.

Really, the important thing to do is play games that get your heart pumping. And, to do that, you should play games on my list, and not Dan’s.
