Ubisoft: Assassin’s Creed Yearly Release Argument Based on Just Quality

Arguments pertaining to well-known franchises such as Assassin’s Creed having an installment released annually is “strange”, according to the IP’s creative director.

Ubisoft Montreal’s Alex Hutchinson said at a GDC Europe panel that how often the iterations are released for a series isn’t what the argument should be based on, but instead should be regarding the game’s quality.

I find it strange we’ve decided yearly is too often. If Radiohead put out an album every month, I’d buy it. It’s about the quality.

Installments for the Assassin’s Creed franchise being released yearly allows Ubisoft to keep the brand “in people’s minds”: “We can keep telling the story.” Hutchinson added:

Assassin’s Creed 3 is as displaced from Assassin’s Creed 2 as much as Medal of Honor is from Call of Duty.

He also stressed that the developers are treating Assassin’s Creed 3 as a new franchise, with the comments previously being mirrored by Hutchinson when he said the title is “90% a new game”.

Assassin’s Creed 3 launches on October 30th in North America and a day later in Europe.
