Uncharted 3’s Sand “is Going to be Massive”, Like Snow in Uncharted 2

Naughty Dog seems to be continuing their commitment to graphical excellence for their upcoming game Uncharted 3: Drakes’s Deception. Arne Meyer has shared some information about Drake’s new desert backdrop and what exactly goes on with their team behind the scenes to bring projects to life.

When asked about the sand in Uncharted 3, Meyer told NowGamer:

Sand is going to be massive in the same way the snow effects were massive in Uncharted 2. It’s hard to explain how it works and how we developed it, but it absolutely ended up real and believable. It was one of our biggest challenges. Sand isn’t just there to create footholds; it pours, it shifts, so we wanted to introduce it in a way that looks great but also presents you with big challenges.

Meyer also commented on Uncharted 3’s current state of development:

Our development process is very collaborative, we all work together on our ideas and help them evolve, so everything is constantly changing. So in the next few months we can polish areas that need work and really eke out as much quality a they can until the very last minute.

Many people still consider Uncharted 2 to be a graphical benchmark for console games today. It will be interesting to see how Naughty Dog will push their game engine even further. Uncharted 3 launches on November 1st.
