Counter-Strike Goes Global, Coming to Consoles Next Year

A fan made mod of Half-Life, the original Counter-Strike shook the gaming world as it quickly became one of the biggest games of all time, fundamentally affecting how publishers viewed multiplayer gaming. Released 12 years ago, the PC game never came to consoles due to their non-existent online capabilities, but Valve is planning to change all that, and will release an updated Counter-Strike on PSN.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive features new maps, characters, and weapons as well as new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing at Valve said:

Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999.

For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.

Global Offensive is being developed by Valve along with Hidden Path Entertainment, and is due out early next year for PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, PC and Mac. The game will be playable at PAX Prime this month and the Eurogamer Expo 2011.
