Portal 2 – Trophy Guide

Portal 2 got a huge ovation at E3 when it was announced that it would be coming to the PlayStation 3 and it did not disappoint, getting rave scores around the internet, including from here. Now, let us help you get the platinum in the game, thanks to a community trophy guide from Thomas Richey, aka Musicgod123 on the forums.

Difficulty: Anywhere from 4-7 out of 10, depending on your skill and problem solving levels.

Time Dedication: 30-45 Hours. Again, this depends on your skill level.

Trophies: (51 Total) 1 Platinum, 42 Bronze, 5 Silvers, 3 Gold

Wake up call (Bronze) Survive the Manual override.

You will get this trophy in the story at the very beginning.

You Monster (Bronze)Reunite with GLaDOS.

Yes, that happens. This is also story related and impossible to miss.

Undiscouraged (Bronze)Complete the first Thermal Discouragement Beam test.

Again, this one’s impossible to miss.

Bridge Over Troubling Water (Bronze)Complete the first Hard-Light Surfaces test.

Impossible to miss, once again.

SaBOTour (Bronze)Make a break for it.

Read the description for the trophy above…

Stalemate associate (Bronze)Press the Button!

This is impossible to miss. Funny part of the game, too.

Tater Tote (Bronze)Carry Science Forward.

Hurray for science! Story related, impossible to miss.

Vertically Unchallenged (Bronze)Master the Repulsion Gel.

Story related, impossible to miss.

Stranger than Friction (Bronze)Master the Propulsion Gel.

Valve officially wins the award for Best Names for Trophies. At least in my book they do. Impossible to miss, story related.

White Out (Bronze)Complete the First Conversion Gel test.

Impossible. To. Miss.

Tunnel of Funnel (Bronze)Master the Excursion Funnel.

You just can’t miss this one if you beat the story mode!

Dual Pit Experiment (Bronze)Do the same test twice.

Damn you Wheatley… Damn you… Impossible to miss.

The Part Where He Kills You (Bronze)This is the part.

What a vivid description. Thank you, Valve. Impossible to miss.

Lunacy (Gold)That just happened.

Indeed it did. This is both impossible to miss and it is awesome!

Drop Box (Silver)Place a cube on a button without touching the cube.

This is easier than it sounds. For this, go to Chapter 2, and wait until you get to the Advanced Ariel Faith Plate Test Chamber. Jump on all of the Ariel Faith Plates until you land on regular ground. Then, push the button in front of you and allow the trash to fly. Then, set up a Portal on the first “sideways” platform you must portal through in order to get to the button you pushed. Next, set up the other portal right above the button the cube must land on. Put it where the portal on the right is.

Overclocker (Silver)Complete Test chamber 10 in 70 seconds.

This one is not easy. Honesty, there’s no easy way to do this. You just have to repeatedly run that test chamber and find shortcuts to save time. Continue to do this until you can run it in under 70 seconds.

Pit Boss (Bronze)Show that Pit who’s boss.

I actually accidentally got this trophy. I believe this is in Chapter 9. When you first escape Wheatley’s spike trap, start to run away, but then come back to Wheatley when he yells to come back. He will plead you to jump in the pit. So, do it. Just jump in the pit.

Preservation of Mass (Bronze) Break the rules in Test Chamber 07.

For those of you who played Portal, you will love this trophy. When you beat this chamber, do not enter the elevator! Put the companion cube on a “portable” surface, then place a portal past the surface which destroys the companion cube. Just grab the cube and bring it towards the elevator.

Pturretdactyl (Bronze)Use an Aerial Faith Plate to launch a turret.

This one is very easy. All you have to do is go to a level with and Aerial Faith Plate and a turret. This can be done on the same level as Drop Box. Grab a turret and drop it on an Aerial Faith Plate and watch it fly.

Final Transmission (Bronze)Find the hidden signal in one of the Rat Man’s dens.

This can also be completed in the same level as drop box. After launching the trash, grab the radio. Then, set up two portals. Set the first one up on the first sideways surface you land on when using the aerial faith plates (this is the same surface you used for the drop box trophy). Next, set up your second portal on the surface farthest to the right above the surface you set up your first portal. Let me clarify… If you were standing on the surface where you set up your first portal, you would look left, up at the wall, and set up your second portal on the “portable” surface the farthest to the right.

Good Listener (Bronze)Take GLaDOS’ escape advice.

Yes, you have to die for this trophy too. In Chapter four, while you are running away from GLaDOS, she will open up and area and encourage you to go there, saying that you can escape there. Wheatley will be telling you not to listen to GLaDOS. Simply go into that area and await your doom…

Scanned Alone (Bronze)Stand in a defective turret detector.

During Chapter five, you will come upon a turret detector zone. Wheatley will talk about how you should find something to replace the regular turret with to make the defective turrets become activated. Simply stand where the original turret was and listen to the other turrets become confused as they plunge to their doom.

No Hard Feelings (Bronze)Save a turret from Redemption.

Hurray for turrets. During Chapter two, you will come upon a turret that Wheatley will tell you to ignore, while it says that it’s different. You will come upon that same turret during Chapter 5, while you are escaping. You will come upon several conveyor belts. You will see one with a turret that is still alive. It’s saying “I’m different”. Poor little turret… Anyway, just pick it up and take it with you until you get the trophy.

Schrodinger’s Catch (Bronze)Catch a blue-painted box before it touches the ground.

What a knee slapper… This is not as difficult as it sounds. During Chapter 6, you will come across a repulsion gel chamber that has a cube inside a giant glass box. There are two ways you can go about doing this: 1. Spray the cube with blue, and then once the glass is broken, quickly douse it in water and retrieve it. 2. Spray the cube with blue, then attempt to catch it as it flies out of the box.

Ship Overboard (Bronze)Discover the Missing Experiment.

You Half-Life fans will love this trophy. This trophy is found in Chapter 6. Towards the end of Chapter 6, you will come upon an area that looks like this!

Go inside the building you are supposed to go, and you will come upon a door that looks like this!

Go through this door, and go all the way through. You will find an open door with a huge empty room and a lifesaver inside. Bam. Trophy.

Door Prize (Bronze)Examine all the vitrified test chamber doors.

There are five doors total. During Chapter 6, you will have to launch yourself by jumping down an elevator shaft. There is an area where you must place one portal, and it looks like this!

Just go up there and you will find 3 doors. Click on the doors to hear Cave Johnson say funny things. Then, continue through the chapter. Remember the area where you got the Ship Overboard trophy? There remaining two doors are in that area. Click on the doors and you will get the trophy.

Portrait of a Lady (Bronze)Find a hidden portrait.

This will be found in the beginning of Chapter 7, after completing the first test chamber. After exiting, you will come upon this area.

Portal up to that area to receive the trophy.

You Made Your Point (Bronze)Refuse to solve the first test chamber in Chapter 8.

Simple enough. Just sit there and don’t solve the puzzle until you get the trophy.

Smash TV (Bronze)Break 11 test chamber monitors.

After receiving the You Made Your Point trophy in Chapter 8, you will go through several test chambers. There will be large TV screens with Wheatley’s face on them. All you have to do is launch yourself into the TV’s to break them. You will know when you break one, seeing as it will cause Wheatley to say humorous things. If can’t figure one of them out, here is a very helpful Rooster Teeth video:

High Five (Bronze)Celebrate your cooperative calibration success.

This one’s easy. High five your partner after the calibration course.

Team Building (Bronze)Complete all test chambers in the Team Building co-op course.

This cannot be missed if you complete the co-op campaign.

Confidence Building (Bronze)Complete all test chambers in the Mass and Velocity co-op course.

This is also impossible to miss while doing the co-op campaign.

Bridge Building (Bronze)Complete all test chambers in the Hard-Light Surfaces co-op course.

Read the trophy description above.

Obstacle Building (Bronze)Complete all test chambers in the Excursion Funnels co-op course.

I grow tired of repeating myself, look above.

You Saved Science (Gold)Complete all test chambers in all courses in co-op.

Damn straight you saved science. Look at all of those experiments! Just do what the description tells you to do.

Iron Grip (Bronze)Never lose a cube in Chamber 6 of the Mass and Velocity co-op course.

This one is fairly self-explanatory. This requires a lot of precise timing by both you and your partner. Just launch your partner towards a cube whenever one is launched, to avoid having the cube touch the ground. If a cube does touch the ground, simply restart that chamber.

Gesticul-8 (Bronze)Perform all 8 gestures of your own volition in co-op.

You will slowly get gestures throughout the co-op campaign. Do all of them to get this trophy.

Can’t Touch This (Bronze)Dance in front of a turret blocked by a hard light bridge in co-op.

Easy enough. Just put a bridge in front of a turret and dance your ass off.

Empty Gesture (Bronze)Drop your co-op partner in goo while they are gesturing by removing the bridge under them.

Again, easy enough. By goo, Valve means the goo that kills you, not the goo that makes you do cool stuff.

Party of Three (Bronze)Find the hidden companion cube in Co-op test chamber.

This will be found in Chamber 9 of the Excursion funnels. Seeing as descriptions are easier to think about when visualized, here’s a link to a wonderful video showing you where to get the cube.

Narbacular Drop (Bronze)Place a portal under your partner while they are gesturing.

Put a portal anywhere, and then under your partner during their gesture. Trivia! Narbacular drop was the original name for Portal!

Professor Portal (Gold)After completing co-op, complete calibration course online with a friend who hasn’t played yet.

This one is fairly self-explanatory. I don’t think I need to get any more in-depth on it.

Air Show (Bronze)Perform 2 aerial gestures before touching the ground in co-op.

All you have to do is find a room with portal surfaces on the ceilings and floors. Place a portal directly above and below you, then gesture away during free fall to get the trophy.

Portal Conservation Society (Bronze)Complete Chamber 3 in the Hard-Light Surfaces co-op course using only 5 total portal placement.

A visual for this description would be nice. Here’s a wonderful video showing you how to get this trophy, seeing as my text wouldn’t be descriptive enough.

Four Ring Circus (Bronze)Enter four different portals without touching the ground in co-op.

This one is easier than it sounds. Set up a portal directly above and below you, and then go into free fall. Have your partner set up a portal on the ceiling somewhere. Once your partner is ready, have them place their other portal on the ground where your portal is, so that you will pop into their other portal.

Triple Crown (Bronze)Solve 3 co-op chambers in the Mass and Velocity course in under 60 seconds each.

This can be tricky. For this trophy I suggest doing it in chambers 2, 3, and 4. If you mess up, simply restart. If you cannot figure out how to quickly complete these chambers, here is an incredibly helpful video.

Still Alive (Bronze)Complete course 4 with neither you nor your co-op partner dying.

Practice makes perfect with this one. Also, a good partner makes perfect. There are no real shortcuts for this one, just good timing and practice. If you mess up, restart. Just keep trying and trying until you get the trophy.

Asking For Trouble (Bronze)Taunt GLaDOS in front of a camera in each of the five co-op courses.

All you have to do for this trophy is wave in front of one camera in all five of the courses. GLaDOS will say something and you will know if you waved correctly. It’s fairly difficult to wave incorrectly…

Rock Portal Scissors (Silver)Win 3 co-op games of rock-paper-scissors in a row.

This one is a bitch. There is no easy way to do this, just continuously play rock-paper-scissors until you win three games in a row.

Friends List with Benefits (Silver)While playing co-op, hug 3 different people on your friends list.

This is possibly the best name for a trophy ever. The man who named these trophies deserves a medal. This is very easy. Randomly connect with someone online (Or play with a friend) and hug them. If they are already on your friends list, the hug will count. If you were not friends with them before you played with them, you will need to become friends with them, leave that specific game, reconnect with them, and give them a big ol’ hug.
