Mass Effect 3 – E3 Impressions

The intergalactic story of the human race trying to establish themselves as a credible species on an already well founded council, Mass Effect is a critically acclaimed RPG series. During this time, Commander Shepard becomes the first human Spectre and helps lead to the discovery of a huge plot of the species known as the Reapers. Where BioWare and Electronic Arts has succeeded so much is with the choices that carry over from game to game, making every decision an important one that could impact you a lot down the line.

Mass Effect 3 resumes where Mass Effect 2 left off with Commander Shepard returning to Earth to help with the fight against the Reapers, which are a race of sentient machines that resemble actual spacecrafts. Needless to say the fight for the human race’s and the rest of the galaxy’s survival is going to be a tough one.

Fans of the series will be happy to see the changes that will be in the final installment of this best selling franchise. It seems BioWare has returned to the series roots in some ways in the RPG department. Many fans were unhappy with Mass Effect 2 because it took a more third person shooter approach. While it still has tons of action in the gameplay, there is a lot more control to your Shepard and your party members. From the footage that was seen, some squadmates will be returning, but I won’t ruin which ones were seen.

The abilities aspect have been expanded upon for not only Commander Shepard, but all of his allies as well. They are more detailed, and offer a much more engaging experience. With this renewed RPG implementation, the developers have also decided to focus on a stealth approach as well. Using Shepard’s new omni-blade, it is easy to sneak behind your enemies unnoticed and disable them.

Tie in the expanded dialog options that have been added onto the already extensive dialog in the previous games, and you have yourself one of the most engaging experiences to date. Not only are there more options, but also BioWare has taken the approach of adding on even more emotional moments that have even higher consequences than you realize. So if you happen to be a Paragon version of Shepard, being the good guy may not always work out the way you want it to.

Mass Effect 3 looks like it will once again be another solid entry into the series from the fan-friendly BioWare. The game is scheduled for a March 6, 2012 release date, and be sure to stay tuned to PlayStation LifeStyle for all future news on the Mass Effect 3 release.
