Anonymous has been at the center of the gaming world lately, due to its/their attacks on multiple Sony websites, including those which affected access to the PSN. The group has heard the gaming masses’ negative reaction to these attacks, and has responded accordingly in their latest press release.
In a computer-narrated press release which you can read below, someone or a group of people representing the Anonymous entity has cleared the air over just what their goal is. They claim that “Anonymous has been targeting Sony for their outrageous treatment of not only PS3 users and jailbreakers, but also of the general public,” with their central point being that “jailbreaking” simply enables users to do what they want to their devices. Anonymous scorned Sony for what they call a violation of privacy:
The fact that [Sony’s] litigation demanded information on everyone who had viewed the material, was completely unacceptable. This is a threat not only to the gaming community, but to freedom of information in general. The fact that the privacy of individuals can be violated, simply for accessing information, and legal action can be taken for doing something with something you own, are steps far beyond the line.
But Anonymous has now stated that they are “not attacking the PSN at this time.” They saw that this action negatively affected consumers, and have thus “temporarily suspended [their] action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.” The group claims that they are on the consumers’ side, “standing up for your rights.” The attacks are now squarely aimed at Sony, and Anonymous promises “we will try our best to not affect the gamers, as this would defeat the purpose of our actions.” A different campaign is promised, with Anonymous stating “we have plenty of tricks up our sleeves,” and their retaliation will continue. So besides DDoS attacks, what could Anonymous be planning? And what does Sony have prepared in defense? No one, perhaps not even the Anonymous collective nor Sony, knows for sure, but of course we will follow this story as it develops.
