In a press release today, Insomniac Games has provided plenty of details regarding their latest upcoming sequel in the smash hit Resistance series. Set to be released on September 6, 2011, Resistance 3 will be bringing the heat with new upgradeable weapons, a full campaign playable in 2 player co-op online and offline, as well as a retooled competitive multiplayer mode intended to bring more focus to the chaotic game play.
As a warning to the reader – the rest of this article contains spoilers from Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.
The campaign mode will pick up 4 years after the events of Resistance 2, featuring Joseph Capelli as the new main protagonist. Capelli has been dishonorably discharged, and has gone into hiding with his new wife and son. After being approached by Dr. Malikov, Capelli is convinced to embark on a new mission in the hopes of saving his family from being over run by the Chimeran invasion. As a reaction to consumer demand, the entire campaign will be playable in a 2 player co-operative mode offline and online. In the co-operative mode there will be new player commands and actions not available in single player that encourage players to work together to overcome obstacles within the game.
Competitive multiplayer is also receiving significant changes. In response to the possibility that 60 players in a game was not taken advantage of correctly, Insomniac Games have decided to give us a more focused multiplayer experience. How exactly this will be more implemented is yet to be seen, but the mode will be progression based, with players earning new abilities as they play. The multiplayer maps will be set all over the world, and all of them will be different from the levels seen throughout the single player campaign.
While Resistance 2 was an incredible follow up to the original game, there were several features lacking from the game which many fans have cried out to Insomniac about. Like the great developer they are, they have listened. The infamous weapon wheel selection from Resistance: Fall of Man will be making a return to Resistance 3, allowing players to choose the weapon that is right for the job and their playing style at will. To further improve on the weapons, players will be able to upgrade them in various ways and focus on making their favorite weapons more useful. While recognizable guns such as the Rossmore shotgun, Bullseye, Auger, and the Marksmen rifle will be making returns, the game will feature many more exotic alien weaponry as a result of the lack of a human military force present in the game. Capelli is on his own for this mission, and must make do with whatever is on hand.
