Kingdom Hearts 3 Confirmed, Two More “in Conception”

Based on a unusual crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts surprised many gamers when it released in 2002. The series was successful enough to spawn 5 sequels on various platforms. However, we haven’t seen a new console entry since Kingdom Hearts II in 2005 (not counting 2007’s re-release of the title). Is it time for a new console Kingdom Hearts title? Series director Tetsuya Nomura certainly believes so.

The Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Ultimania book releases in Japan tomorrow, and contains an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, the series director of Kingdom Hearts. Luckily, the interview has been released earlier than expected, and reveals some very surprising details. Nomura confirms in the interview that Kingdom Hearts III is currently in development, with two titles other than KH3 in conception:

About the next title, Kingdom Hearts 3 depends on Final Fantasy XIII Versus, but development of the next title is already underway. There are two titles other than Kingdom Hearts 3 in conception, and I think I’ll release one within this year.

As from next year, I want to put out a title with multiple main characters.

The series won’t end in Kingdom Hearts 3, more like the conclusion of the Xehanort saga.

It’s not the case that when Sora’s story is over another hero’s story will begin; Sora will be the hero until the end.
