Square Sheds ‘Light’ on New Lara Croft Game

Recently, a new Tomb Raider was hinted at, possibly to be revealed at next week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. However, you need not wait until then, as Square Enix has officially announced Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

The first thing you’ll notice is the absence of the long-standing franchise name, Tomb Raider. Apparently it’s been dropped and in its place is just the lead character’s name, Lara Croft.

Over the years since the series first debuted in 1996, Lara Croft has become quite a star, being featured in everything from novels to a handful of games to the silver screen. But is that enough to reason to ditch the name of the series? Or was the dropping of the Tomb Raider name indicative of a major revamp for the series, so much so that it’s not appropriate to call it ‘Tomb Raider’ anymore. Whatever the reason behind this, we’ll be finding out more details from developer Crystal Dynamics at GDC. In the mean time, head to the game’s official website and sign up for their newsletter.
