Caveat emptor, counterfeit DualShock 3 controllers have hit the internet via Ebay, and possibly other online marketplaces. These counterfeits are responsible for controller connection issues since PS3 system firmware 3.00. Although these issues may have been appearing since before the 3.00 firmware update, they may have been made apparent by people scrutinizing the latest update.

Follow our tips to make sure you don’t get burned by a fake DualShock 3.

To ensure that you don’t end up with one of these fakes, we highly suggest you buy your PS3 accessories from a reputable retailer such as GameStop, Target, Wal-Mart, or Best Buy. If you are looking to save some money by shopping online, Amazon.com always has the lowest prices available on DualShock 3 controllers. When buying from Amazon, make sure the item “ships and is sold by Amazon” to avoid dealing with any of Amazon’s sellers.

At the time of this writing, only White DualShock 3 controllers are being reported as counterfeit, however it’s only a matter of time before counterfeiters catch on and create other colors as well (if it hasn’t already been done).

If you think that you’ve received one of these counterfeit DualShock 3 controllers watch the video below for tips on how to spot one of these fakes.
