Mirror’s Edge was one of the boldest games released this generation, introducing Parkour acrobatics and combat within a first-person viewpoint. The title challenged players and developers alike to rethink what is possible within the [shal]FPS[/shal] genre, yet gained mixed critical success and did sell as well as EA and [shal]DICE[/shal] had hoped. But contrary to what many expected, EA is pushing not only for a new installment, but a much better one.
The gameplay in Mirror’s Edge was actually very good, and most complaints stemmed from the story and short length. [shal]EA[/shal] has refused to shy away from the criticism, instead acknowledging and incorporating them in order to help development for the sequel. [shal]Patrick Soderlund[/shal] of EA Games Europe explained:
“Mirror’s Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move. The game wasn’t perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think.
You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.”
This is great news, and goes in line with EA’s recent strategy shift to promote a higher level of quality within its game lineup, as well as foster new IPs. Mirror’s Edge has a lot of potential as a franchise, and we can’t wait to see what DICE and EA have in store for us.
